About this product
What is chaga powder?
Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a fungus that grows on birch trees in cold northern forests. Ours is collected wild in Estonia and Finland rather than cultivated, then dried and milled. The powder is 100% chaga, and unusually for a mushroom it is mostly fibre, at around 70 g per 100 g.
How it is made
The mushrooms are dried below 40 °C and sorted in the country of origin. In Germany they are analysed, vacuum-cleaned and X-rayed, put through a germ-reduction step, granulated and powdered, passed through metal detection and packed.
What it tastes like
Deep, woody and earthy with a faint natural sweetness reminiscent of vanilla, and none of the mushroom flavour people expect. The colour is a dark brown.
How to use chaga powder
Stir a teaspoon into hot water or coffee, or simmer it gently for a richer brew. It takes well to milk, cinnamon and a little honey, and travels well in a flask.

Our standards
Every van Mel & Co. product is a single ingredient or a short, declared blend, with nothing added that is not on the label. Each one is supplied against a written specification that sets out its origin, sensory character, microbiological limits and allergen status. Where a product is certified organic, the certifying body is named in the specification. We pack in Stellenbosch and ship across South Africa in 100 g, 1 kg and 10 kg.
