About this product
What is lion's mane powder?
Lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus) is a shaggy white mushroom that looks like its name. Ours is cultivated in the Western Cape and processed in South Africa, which makes it one of the few products in our range grown close to home. Only the fruiting body is used, and it is not considered a novel food under EU Regulation 2015/2283.
How it is made
The fresh fruiting bodies are dried in a dehydrator and ground in a universal grinder to a powder that passes 100 mesh. Nothing is added.
What it tastes like
Mild, savoury and faintly sweet, sometimes compared to seafood, with a soft aroma. It is the gentlest of the mushroom powders and the easiest to use in food.
How to use lion's mane powder
Stir it into soups, gravies, risottos and pasta sauces where it adds body and a rounded savoury note, or add a teaspoon to coffee or hot chocolate. It also works in savoury bakes and burger mixes.
Quality and sourcing
Not irradiated and GMO-free. Produced under a documented food safety system in South Africa. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Our standards
Every van Mel & Co. product is a single ingredient or a short, declared blend, with nothing added that is not on the label. Each one is supplied against a written specification that sets out its origin, sensory character, microbiological limits and allergen status. Where a product is certified organic, the certifying body is named in the specification. We pack in Stellenbosch and ship across South Africa in 100 g, 1 kg and 10 kg.
