About this product

What is black currant powder?

Blackcurrant powder is made from whole organic blackcurrants, the fruit of the Ribes nigrum shrub. Our blackcurrants are grown in Finland, where the long light of the northern summer suits the fruit. The powder is 100% blackcurrant with no added sugar, colour or preservative.

How it is made

The berries are dried and milled to a fine powder that passes a 1.5 mm sieve. Because nothing is added, the colour comes entirely from the fruit itself, and the powder has a moisture content of around 9% which keeps it free-flowing.

What it tastes like

Sharp, tart and intensely fruity, the way blackcurrants are straight off the bush. The colour is a deep violet that shifts towards purple-pink when stirred into dairy. A little goes a long way.

How to use black currant powder

Stir a teaspoon into natural yoghurt or overnight oats, blend it into smoothies, or fold it through cake and muffin batter for colour and flavour. It also makes a striking dusting over desserts and a natural colour for icings.

Our standards

Every van Mel & Co. product is a single ingredient or a short, declared blend, with nothing added that is not on the label. Each one is supplied against a written specification that sets out its origin, sensory character, microbiological limits and allergen status. Where a product is certified organic, the certifying body is named in the specification. We pack in Stellenbosch and ship across South Africa in 100 g, 1 kg and 10 kg.
